The management

The tunnel, inaugurated on 16 July 1965 by Presidents Saragat and General de Gaulle, was opened to traffic on 19 July and very soon the Mont Blanc Tunnel route assumed the role of an important link between Italy and North West Europe. In 1966, the first whole year of operation, the number of transits had been 533,504 cars, 14,090 buses and 44,856 lorries. In 1998, (the last whole year of management) 1,192,615 cars, 28,470 buses and 776,604 lorries passed through the tunnel.
